About the Library

The Hampden Free Public Library was established in 1891 and is located in the Town House in the part of Hampden, Massachusetts known as the Village Center.

The mission of the Hampden Free Public Library is to provide materials of popular interest to our adult and juvenile patrons, and to provide materials and services to help local residents satisfy their informational and educational needs. The library currently houses over 27,000 volumes, including popular adult and teen fiction, storybooks for the younger children, magazine, videos, music CD's, and audio books. The Internet, online databases, and other reference materials are available free of charge at the library.

Library Cards

Any resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts age 5 and older may obtain a library card at the Hampden Free Public Library. Please come into the library and complete an application form. Applications for children ages 5 to 17 must be signed by a parent or guardian. Cards are issued while you wait and may be used immediately. If you have a C/WMARS card you are welcome to borrow our materials.  We will gladly issue you a Hampden card.  Lost cards are replaced at a cost of $1.00 for adults. Children's cards will be replaced the first time without charge; additional replacements, $1.00.

Returning materials is easy. When the library is open, please return all materials to the book drop at the circulation desk. After hours, books, magazines, and CD's may be returned in the book drop located outside at the rear of the building. Videos, DVD's and audio books should be returned in the video drop located inside the building. Renewals can be done over the phone. Please have the materials available when you call. The maximum fine for books, magazines and CD's is $1.00; videos and DVD's $5.00. Patrons age 65 and older are.exempt.


Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Hampden Public Library is an organization of volunteers who help support library programs and services for the entire family. Donations from the Friends sponsor the annual summer reading programs and are used to purchase videos, DVD's, and CD's for circulation. Annual membership is $5.00.
